The grand opening of the Opera and Ballet Theater in Dnepropetrovsk on December 26, 1974, marked a momentous occasion in the city's history. The theater had previously existed as the Dnepropetrovsk Opera House (DROT) from 1931 until it was evacuated to Krasnoyarsk in 1941, where it merged with the Odessa troupe. Despite not resuming activities in Dnepropetrovsk after the war, the living memory of "one's own Opera" and its established traditions laid the foundation for its revival in 1974.
The idea of reviving the Dnepropetrovsk Opera was officially approved by the Decree of the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR on August 31, 1973 (No. 405), leading to the creation of the Dnepropetrovsk Opera. This marked a significant moment in the cultural landscape of Dnepropetrovsk, as the city was able to reclaim a cherished institution that had been lost for over three decades.
The opening of the Opera and Ballet Theater was a great fanfare, with dignitaries and cultural enthusiasts in attendance. It was a testament to the resilience and determination of the people of Dnepropetrovsk to reclaim their cultural heritage and establish a new era of artistic excellence. The theater has since become a beloved institution in the city, hosting countless performances and captivating audiences with its magnificent productions.
The theater was founded by a talented team of artists, including Mark Grigoryevich Litvinenko, a respected director and Honored Worker of Culture in Ukraine; Anatoly Vasilievich Arefiev, a People's Artist of the USSR and State Prize laureate for his role as a leading artist; Petr Semenovich Varivoda, a highly regarded conductor and Honored Art Worker of Ukraine, also a State Prize laureate; Lyudmila Vladimirovna Voskresenskaya, Chief Choreographer and Honored Artist of Russia; and Vasily Vasilyevich Kios, Chief Choirmaster and Honored Artist of Ukraine, named after T. G. Shevchenko. Their collective energy and talent brought together a remarkable opera and ballet troupe, choir, and orchestra with immense potential for creative opportunities.

Aspiring performers in the theater industry often looked up to role models who possessed both natural talent and prior stage experience. Nonna Surzhina, Anatoly Danshin, Mykola Poludennyi, and Mykola Ukrainskyi were highly respected figures in the field known for their exceptional vocal abilities. Meanwhile, Leonora Ellinska, Alla Petrina, Olga Zagumennikova, Viktor Rohachev, and Mykola Voytenko have admired soloists in the ballet world. Harry Logvin led the orchestra. These artists shared a common goal of creating a unique and distinctive theater. Through their collective passion, tireless work ethic, and impressive potential, they made that dream a reality.
When the theater first opened, it already had a repertoire that included nine performances which were presented to the audience over the course of a week. Some of these performances have become synonymous with the Dnipropetrovsk State Theater of Opera and Ballet, such as "Prince Igor", "Rigoletto", "Swan Lake", and "Bakhchisarai Fountain". In the first two years alone, the theater staged 18 performances of various genres, including grand classical and chamber operas, ballets, operettas, children's plays, concerts, and thematic musical programs.
The young team of artists at the theater pursued two main creative directions: the mastery and popularization of world classical heritage like "Carmen", "The Barber of Seville", "Eugene Onegin", "Giselle", and "The Nutcracker", as well as exploring the works of modern composers and 20th-century music, particularly the best examples from Ukraine like Khachaturian's "Spartacus", Gershwin's "Porgy and Bess", Shostakovich's "The Lady and the Hooligan", Dankevich's "Bohdan Khmelnytskyi", and Skorulskyi's "The Song of the Forest".
While the theater maintained respect for the traditions of realistic theater, it also kept an open mind and was willing to experiment with new means of expression. This was made possible by the theater's openness and its willingness to collaborate with recognized masters.
The theater is strategically enriching its repertoire with classical productions such as "La Traviata", "Troubadour", "Chopiniana", and "Don Quixote", as well as modern pieces like I. Dzerzhinsky's opera "Silent Don", K. Moldobasanov's ballet "Mother Field", and A. Melikova's "The Legend of Love". The theater is also welcoming a new generation of promising conductors, including M. Shpak and A. Chepurnyi, as well as director-leaders like Yu. Chaika and Ye. Buzin. These professionals are creating successful collaborations on new performances such as "Much Ado in Vain", "The Bell", and "Don Juan". They bring a fresh understanding of musical drama and new aesthetics and stylistics to the collective's activities. They are highly educated, talented, and constantly seeking modern theatrical forms. Their exploration of works by Ukrainian authors have been particularly fruitful, including productions of "Zaporozhets za Danube", "Thunder from Putivlia", "May is Returned", and "Banner Bearers". The theater has also produced notable events in its history, including Prokofiev's ballets "The Clown", "The Prodigal Son", and "Romeo and Juliet", as well as Pucciniyev's "Madame Butterfly" and Ponchielli's "Gioconde". The audience has also enjoyed productions of "The Great Waltz" and the operetta "Silva".
On August 24, 2021, the theater celebrated the 30th anniversary of Ukrainian independence with a grandiose cultural event, premiering the ballet "Forest Song" to the music of M. Skorulskyi. The theater also had the honor of performing for the first time on the stage of the National Opera of Ukraine in Kyiv, where audiences were treated to two ballet performances, "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" and "Forest Song." The international music and theater festival "Crossroads of Ages," dedicated to the 150th anniversary of Lesya Ukrainka, was also held in the theater from September 20 to 24, featuring concerts, master classes, world music premieres, and presentations. The festival was attended by special guest Ariadna Bartai from Hungary.
G. Verdi
Opera legend in 4 acts.
This story is several thousand years old, but it has everything that can captivate a modern viewer. And fatal love, female deceit, tragic coincidences of fate, a love triangle (Aida - Amneris - Radames), and crime. In the opera Aida, Verde managed to combine, as Massimo Mila noted, "the innate strength of the soul and the Garibaldian courage of his inspiration with the maturity of the spiritual world, deepened by many years of life experience, and the perfection achieved by an annoying and difficult search."
J. Puccini
Lyric opera in 3 acts
The opera Madama Butterfly is a touching story of love between a young Japanese woman, Cio-Cio-san, and a Lieutenant of the American Navy, Pinkerton. The plot is based on a short story by John L. Long, but the actual immortality of the "girl from Nagasaki" was given by the Italian composer G. Puccini. He was amazed and deeply moved by the love story of a beautiful geisha for an American sailor.
The image of a loving girl created by the composer has captivated all opera art fans for the second century. "Lady Butterfly," which is how "Madama Butterfly" is translated, is one of the most significant parts for a soprano. This image submits to real opera maidens, who have beautiful and strong voices and can convey the happiness of first love and pain from separation from their beloved Pinkerton.
Carl Orff
/ Mercies and grimaces of Fortune /
Musical and choreographic performance for choir, soloists, ballet, orchestra
This superb work is based on poems and songs of wandering poets of the 13th century. The content of the so-called "Bavarian songs" (literal translation of the name) is quite diverse: round spring dances, love lyrics, and even philosophical quests, standing next to the theme of the sinful joys of life.
But the essential thing in this work is the music of Carl Orff. It is in it that our whole life seems to be hidden. And everyone who knows how to hear and feel will find his own in this music - there are so many facets and nuances. Of course, it is unrealistic to explain the music in words, but it is precisely thanks to it that the hypnotic magnetism of the work is created. There is some incomprehensible mysticism in it. Everything seems to be simple, but there are no definitive answers.
And we can only remember one thing: life goes on, and the wheel of Fortune is spinning.
G. Verdi
Opera in 2 acts
Fantastic scenery, striking in its beauty and scale! Unique author's performance.
Of the twenty-six operas created by G. Verdi, "Nabucco" (Nebuchadnezzar) is classified as one of the earliest and, simultaneously, one of the best in his work. Moreover, the opera was a turning point in the composer's biography. "It was the opera that started my life as an artist," recalled Verdi.
On March 9, 1842, the opera Nabucco premiere took place on the stage of La Scala until the end of 1842, 65 times with a crowded hall! Critics called "Nabucco" a "drama for the choir" and even a "choral fresco"; the choir, embodying the image of the people, plays such a significant role in the opera. Despite the biblical story, the Italians heard in Nabucco the tale of the fate of their homeland, which is fighting for freedom. Therefore, it is not surprising that the choir of captive Jews, "Va, pensiero, sull'ali date," became the second national anthem of Italy.
The triumph of the opera changed the fate of Verdi - at the age of 29, he became the most famous composer and worked non-stop; the premiere followed the premiere. Later, Verdi will call this period of his life sweet hard labor. It was during this period that the great Italian created real opera hits that are now on all the opera stages of the world: Rigoletto, La Traviata, Trovatore, Sicilian Evening, Simon Boccanegra, Un ballo in maschera, Macbeth," "Don Carlos," "Aida," "Othello" and others.
